Library Services

readers in the libraryThe National Library of Uganda (NLU) collects, organizes and preserves the Nation’s documented intellectual and cultural heritage for both present and future use.  It currently offers the following services to the public:

Reference and Research
The collection in the library is for reference and research. It is made up of a variety of reading and information materials including newspapers from as far back as the 1950s; government documents from various ministries and departments; research reports; general reference books and books on Africa, especially East Africa. The library is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 8.30 am to 6.00pm on and on Saturday from 9.00am to 1.00 pm. The library is closed on Sundays and public holidays. 

Reading Room
The reading room can accommodate up to 40 people and is located in the middle of the building that houses the NLU.

Electronic Information Material
Computers are available for use by the general public.  The NLU has access to several electronic data bases including African Journals online, EBCO Publishing and Emerald, among others. These are provided courtesy of the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP). There are also available connection points in the library where library users with laptops can access the Internet.

Library Database
The library database can be accessed on the NLU’s Local Area Network.  In addition is a database of donations made to all the public libraries in the country for the past fifteen years.
