The book week festival is carried out every year. During that week there are various book related activities held in different parts of the country. They include a book fair in Kampala, reading tents, both in Kampala and up country, book exhibitions and book donations. The celebrations started as far back as 1997.
The National Library of Uganda (NLU) and the National Book Trust of Uganda (NABOTU) organize activities in up country centres. This is done in close collaboration with the various local governments, public and community libraries and local booksellers.
Each year, the upcountry activities have a focus centre where NLU joins the Local government to organise teacher/librarian training in library management and a community reading tent for school children. NLU usually donates books to participating schools.
